Data Scientist Role at Pinterest

As a Data Scientist in Pinterest's Core organization, you will have a pivotal role in shaping the future of both people-facing and business-facing products. Your role will be central to leveraging expertise in quantitative modeling, experimentation, and algorithms to address some of the most intricate engineering challenges the company faces. This position calls for a collaborative approach, interacting with a diverse array of cross-functional partners across various departments including Product, Engineering, Design, Research, Product Analytics, and Data Engineering, among others.

Key Responsibilities

Your contributions are critical in influencing and enhancing product development teams by introducing scientific rigor into real-world products that serve millions of Pinterest users, creators, advertisers, and merchants globally. Some of the key responsibilities include:

  • Developing best practices for instrumentation and experimentation and effectively communicating these to product engineering teams to align with the company's mission of inspiring creativity.
  • Applying scientific rigor and statistical methods to the process of product creation and improvement, with a keen understanding of user behavior.
  • Building and iterating prototype analysis pipelines to derive insights at scale, along with a comprehensive knowledge of data structures and metrics.
  • Working collaboratively with product managers, engineers, designers, and researchers to craft the next generation of experiences on Pinterest.

What Pinterest Looks For

The ideal candidate is expected to have:

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in analyzing data in a fast-paced, data-driven environment.
  • Proven skills in solving analytical problems using quantitative approaches related to Machine Learning, Statistical Modeling, Forecasting, or Econometrics.
  • Experience with machine learning and deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, or scikit-learn.
  • A meticulous and scientific approach to analysis and data, characterized by skepticism, detail-oriented work ethic, and commitment to high-quality results.
  • Proficiency in manipulating large data sets and fluency in SQL (or other database languages) along with a scripting language like Python or R.
  • Exceptional communication skills for conveying insights to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • The capability to work effectively as a team player and partner with cross-functional leadership to swiftly transform insights into actionable outcomes.

Note that the salary range is disclosed for the sake of transparency — for US-based applicants, the range is between $123,470 and $254,024 USD, with eligibility for equity. The final salary will be dependent on factors such as location, travel, prior relevant experience, skills, and expertise.
