Key Responsibilities

The Data Engineer will be expected to fulfill a variety of critical duties, which include:

  • Developing and optimizing data models and schemas leveraged across relational and non-relational databases, which are indispensable for effective system integrations and analytics.

  • Supporting data migration and synchronization efforts, which involve transitioning legacy systems and applications to modern cloud platforms.

  • Utilizing AWS services, such as Glue, Lambda, S3, RDS, and Redshift, to establish and maintain scalable, fault-tolerant data infrastructures.

  • Engaging in both data validation and reconciliation, conducting thorough quality checks while developing comprehensive reports to ensure data accuracy.

  • Integrating data from various sources, including APIs, streaming inputs, and file-based systems into centralized repositories or data lakes.

  • Automating data workflows through the application of infrastructure-as-code and CI/CD principles to maintain efficiency and repeatability in processes.

  • Monitoring and troubleshooting the performance of data pipelines to ensure they comply with SLAs and uphold operational reliability.

  • Implementing data encryption, masking, and access controls in strict accordance with DoD cybersecurity policies and RMF requirements.

  • Supporting the development of dashboards and analytics products, enabling data-driven insights critical for mission stakeholders.

  • Maintaining documentation for all processes and updates carried out, including data dictionaries, lineage, and essential technical specifications.

  • Actively participating in Agile sprints and contributing to backlog refinement, testing, and cross-functional collaboration with other departments.

Qualifications

Several qualifications must be met for the Data Engineer position:

Clearance Requirement

  • Must hold an active Top Secret clearance to be eligible for this role.

Education

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related technical field is mandatory.

Experience

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in data engineering, system integrations, or analytics enablement is required.
  • Proven experience in building and optimizing data pipelines, preferably in enterprise or federal environments.
  • Familiarity with Agile software development and DevSecOps delivery frameworks.

Technical Knowledge

  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python and SQL, along with familiarity in using ETL frameworks (e.g., Apache NiFi, Talend, or AWS Glue).
  • Experience with cloud data services, chiefly AWS GovCloud options like RDS, S3, Lambda, and others.
  • An understanding of various database management systems like PostgreSQL, SQL Server, DynamoDB, and MongoDB.
  • Familiarity with RESTful API integrations and data exchange formats (JSON, XML, CSV) is preferred.
  • Knowledge about DoD data security and compliance standards, specifically regarding encryption, RMF, and STIG adherence.
  • Skills in developing and maintaining data validation, profiling, and transformation scripts are beneficial. Experience in data visualization and analytics tools (Power BI, Tableau, QuickSight) is also a plus.

Certifications (Preferred)

  • AWS Certified Data Engineer – Associate or AWS Certified Developer.
  • CompTIA Security+ CE or an equivalent DoD 8570 certification may be essential.
  • Certified Data Management Professional (CDMP) or similar qualifications would be advantageous.
