The Senior Design Engineer will have various responsibilities that include:
Design and Packaging: You will be involved in the design and packaging of core engine components, including aluminum and cast-iron castings, geartrain, valvetrain, drivetrain, and in-cylinder components. Supplier Relationships: Developing and maintaining strong relationships with suppliers is crucial. You may be required to travel to suppliers to align design solutions with high quality and cost expectations.
Project Management: The successful candidate will be responsible for planning and managing projects and sub-project deliverables, showcasing leadership abilities.
Risk Assessment: Conducting risk assessments through effective FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) generation to identify and address design risks, as well as determining validation needs, is a significant part of the role.
Reporting: You will support component and system design reviews by conducting or generating reports.
Communication: Consistency in communication with peers, team leaders, and stakeholders regarding progress against planned activities is essential.
Technical Drawings: You will be responsible for developing drawings to Caterpillar standards and other technical documents necessary for the release of parts for both prototype and volume production.
Supplier Collaboration: You will work alongside suppliers, utilizing APQP methodology and tools to ensure efficient project progress.
To qualify for this position, candidates must have:
A strong background in one or more of the following Core Engine systems: Rotating systems, valvetrain, castings, lubrication, breather, and cooling systems, as well as bolted joint and sealing experience.
A minimum of 6 years' design experience in CAD environments.
A robust technical background; an HNC or a technical degree in mechanical or automotive engineering is preferred, though other qualifications and experience may also be considered.
A good understanding of Component Manufacturing principles and processes, in addition to manufacturing assembly principles is crucial for this role.
Knowledge of engine and mechanical components and systems, along with self-motivation and the ability to manage tasks effectively to meet established commitments.
Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in a team setting are highly valued.
While not mandatory, the following experience and knowledge may enhance your application:
Modeling and Detailing experience in CREO4 and the use of Team Centre or similar data management software.
Experience running and participating in FMEA analyses.
Validation and verification experience with components and engines.
Experience gained specifically in the off-highway diesel or machine sector.
