Position Overview

Startec is currently seeking a full-time Industrial Refrigeration Engineer to work remotely within Canada. The position reports directly to the Director of Engineering. Responsibilities

The role includes several key performance indicators (KPIs) that guide the daily duties and expectations of the Industrial Refrigeration Engineer. These areas are divided into three main categories:

System Design & Engineering (Weighting 40%)

The Engineer will be responsible for:

  • Developing technical documentation, including PID drawings, piping layouts, general arrangement drawings, and vessel drawings.
  • Preparing project documentation, such as operating/control descriptions.
  • Conducting refrigeration system design by working closely with clients to define design requirements and performing heat load calculations.
  • Developing conceptual refrigeration system designs and selecting major equipment like vessels, compressors, and chillers.
  • Coordinating the design of control systems alongside the necessary electrical infrastructure and ammonia detection systems.
  • Designing and analyzing HVAC systems specifically for refrigeration machine rooms.
  • Collaborating with internal or external piping designers to develop 3D models.
  • Staying abreast of advancements in the refrigeration industry by reading industry journals and attending training and conferences.

Project Management (Weighting 30%)

In terms of project management duties, responsibilities include:

  • Providing engineering support to service, sales, and project groups.
  • Working alongside the Director of Engineering to design and execute various projects.
  • Coordinating all project elements with owners, contractors, and consultants to seamlessly integrate refrigeration system design with building infrastructure.
  • Developing bill of materials and approving all project drawings.

Training, Support & Development (Weighting 30%)

The Engineer will also have a role in ensuring quality assurance which includes:



  • Supporting the service group with commissioning and resolving field issues.
  • Conducting quality assurance checks on project deliverables.
  • Assisting with training and mentoring engineers in training.

Required Qualifications

Candidates applying for this position should have a P.Eng or PE designation with a minimum of three to five years of experience specifically in industrial refrigeration applications, including Ammonia and CO2 refrigeration systems. Key qualifications include:

  • Good working knowledge of ASME/ANSI codes; knowledge of CSA B-52 or IIAR codes is a plus.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Windows operating systems, including the Microsoft Office Suite and engineering design software.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD to develop PIDs, layout drawings, and more.
  • Strong technical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • The ability to communicate effectively and manage conflicts, along with strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Adept in time management skills and able to efficiently handle multiple large projects simultaneously.
  • Fabrication or construction experience is considered an asset.
