Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the Location Services Engineer include:

  • Maintaining and optimizing geocoding, routing, and other location services servers.
  • Continually improving local databases to enhance search results and routing outputs.
  • Coordinating the ingestion, transformation, and curation of raw geospatial data.
  • Developing pipelines to convert large-scale data sources into specialized data structures for location services.
  • Managing releases, automated data processing pipelines, and automated testing.
  • Monitoring geocoding services and identifying areas for targeted enhancements.
  • Integrating datasets for team collaboration within MapTiler, including elevation and address points.

Required Skills

Applicants for this role should possess the following skills:

  • A strong ownership mentality of codebases and databases, with the ability to define requirements and set priorities.
  • Hands-on expertise in programming and system design.
  • Deep knowledge of common data structures and expressions.
  • Familiarity with the OpenStreetMap data model and its limitations.
  • Proficiency in at least one language, with a polyglot environment approach. The technology stack includes TypeScript, Java, and Rust, with future plans to incorporate C++.
  • Understanding that a readable and maintainable codebase may be prioritized over an overly elegant solution.
  • Basic familiarity with the GIS domain and coordinate systems, combined with a genuine interest in maps, geocoding, and routing.
  • Excellent communication skills, especially in a remote work environment, with fluency in English being essential.

Nice to Have Skills

While not mandatory, the following skills will enhance an applicant's desirability:

  • Python, Ansible, and Bash scripting knowledge.
  • Experience with Docker.
  • Familiarity with OSM data-processing tools, such as Osmium.
  • Hands-on expertise in using AI agents to contribute to codebases.
  • Previous experience in prompt/context or harness engineering.
