Company Overview

Our National Conversation (ONC) is committed to reducing partisanship and promoting effective solutions to address pressing challenges faced by America. The organization, powered by America's youth, operates as a media outlet, producing educational materials and facilitating dialogue intended to improve the country. This mission makes ONC an appealing environment for individuals passionate about political discourse and interested in nonpartisan content creation.

Job Description

The position of Moderate Writer Intern at ONC reports directly to the Core Content Team Lead and the Managing Editor. The role centers around contributing to ONC’s goal of delivering nonpartisan news, opinions, and policy solutions by assisting with various tasks within the Core Content Department. Interns will specifically engage in writing political content that includes high-quality Op-Eds and Policy Proposals that will be published on ONC’s website.

The nature of this role is highly collaborative, where interns will have numerous opportunities to engage in respectful political discussions in a nonpartisan environment. A notable benefit for exceptional writers is the potential to collaborate on writing a book for ONC, providing a great addition to any portfolio.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities expected of the Moderate Writer Intern include:

  • Producing consistent and engaging content for the ONC website in collaboration with other core content writers.
  • Ensuring that all published work aligns with ONC's commitment to nonpartisanship, ideological diversity, and civil debate.
  • Actively participating in discussions with writers from various political backgrounds—conservative, progressive, and moderate—covering eight policy areas: Governance, Economics, Infrastructure, Healthcare, Foreign Policy and Defense, Justice and Public Safety, Social Issues, and Science, Environment and Technology.
  • Contributing to podcasts, events, and other assignments as needed.

In terms of schedule, this internship is remote, primarily conducted over Zoom and Slack. Therefore, candidates should be adept at managing virtual communications and meeting expectations consistently. The intern must commit to staying with the position until at least the end of the Fall semester (December 8th, 2025), although many interns may choose to extend their duration depending on their performance and interest.

Qualifications and Skills

To qualify for the Moderate Writer Intern position, candidates should possess the following skills, education, and experiences:

  • Ideally pursuing a degree in Political Science, Journalism, English or Literature, Public Policy, Media Studies, International Relations, or related fields, demonstrating a relevant academic background.
  • Exceptional writing skills in English are a mandatory requirement.
  • Proficient verbal communication abilities will be considered advantageous, allowing candidates to engage effectively during discussions.
  • Demonstrated responsiveness, consistency, and effective communication, especially in times of conflict, are essential.
  • Experience in policy research, political commentary, or related domains would be beneficial.
  • A strong enthusiasm for ONC’s mission and values, alongside a willingness to engage in civil and constructive conversations across differing political spectrums, is expected.
  • The ability to work remotely and manage personal schedules effectively is crucial to meet deadlines.
  • Experience with Google Workspace is preferred but not necessary.
  • Candidates must be capable of attending mandatory meetings—both organization-wide and specifically within the Core Content Department on Fridays.
  • Authorization to intern in the U.S. is required.

Compensation and Benefits

It is vital to note that this is an unpaid internship. However, it offers various benefits that can significantly enhance a candidate’s career:

  • Flexible scheduling allows interns to balance their commitments while gaining experience.
  • Earning college credit is an option for students looking to fulfill internship requirements.
  • The position promotes professional networking, connecting interns with influential figures in the political and media sphere.
  • Interns can build their resume with tangible experiences in content creation and policy discourse, which are valuable assets in the competitive job market.

Application Process

Applicants are required to submit a writing sample along with their application. This step is crucial in demonstrating their writing proficiency and alignment with ONC's mission. The selection process prioritizes candidates who resonate with the ideals of ONC and exhibit a passion for nonpartisan political engagement.

In summary, the Moderate Writer Intern position at Our National Conversation provides an exceptional opportunity for budding writers passionate about politics and eager to make a difference while honing their skills in a cooperative, engaging environment.
