Job Overview

The Senior Backend Engineer will primarily contribute to the development and design of the Rafiki web service API. This role is crucial as it facilitates the opening of NALA's payment rails to customers through an API, enabling corporations to efficiently send, receive, and convert funds directly from their systems. Responsibilities

In your role, you will engage in various projects, particularly in your first months. These include:

  • Building business-facing features in collaboration with the frontend team.
  • Integrating with payment partners to deliver rapid and reliable payment solutions across multiple countries.
  • Implementing essential business logic, which encompasses {f Know Your Business}, {f Identification Verification}, {f Anti Money Laundering}, and fraud monitoring to ensure customer safety.
  • Writing configurable code to swiftly adapt to evolving market requirements.
  • Leveraging data to inform decision-making and gain customer insights.
  • Automating processes to alleviate support loads, ultimately enhancing customer satisfaction.
  • Contributing to the core functionalities of the customer-facing REST API.

Technical Skills Required

Candidates should possess:

  • At least 5+ years of experience building highly reliable and scalable backend services in Go.
  • Familiarity with RDBMS systems like Postgres or MySQL.
  • Experience with messaging technologies such as Kafka and RabbitMQ, and familiarity with working in event-driven architectures.
  • A deep understanding of the best practices for developing and deploying services in a cloud environment.
  • Proficiency in collaborating asynchronously with global teams using tools such as Slack, Teams, and Jira.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English.

Nice-to-Have Skills

Candidates with the following experiences will have an edge:



  • Experience working in the Fintech and Payments industry.
  • Previous experience in a tech startup environment.
  • Insights into information security (infosec).
  • Experience in creating robust and well-documented server-to-server APIs (like REST or GraphQL).

Interview Process

The interview process consists of four stages:

  1. An initial 30-minute interview with the Talent Team to understand your motivations.
  2. A 1-hour coding challenge involving a live pair programming exercise with two engineers.
  3. A 1-hour architecture interview that addresses an architecture challenge with two Engineering Managers.
  4. A final 30-minute interview with the CTO or Hiring Manager to discuss your motivations and questions regarding the business.
