Role Summary

The position available is for a Senior Benefits & Retirement Specialist. In this role, the specialist will oversee all retirement functions relating to STRS (California State Teachers' Retirement System) and PERS (California Public Employees' Retirement System). Furthermore, they will manage the benefits administration processes, which include open enrollment, rate updates, and employee enrollments. As the main liaison between Charter Impact’s clients, CalSTRS, CalPERS, and County Offices of Education, accuracy and compliance in reporting are crucial. The specialist will also work closely with the Payroll team to meet client needs, update employee records, and improve the efficiency of benefits and retirement processes.

This position is remote, with candidates expected to be based in specific states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Nevada, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, or Washington.

Key Responsibilities

The Senior Benefits & Retirement Specialist will have a variety of responsibilities, including but not limited to:

  • Acting as the primary liaison for clients with County Offices of Education, CalSTRS, and CalPERS.
  • Responding to escalated issues regarding STRS and PERS by interpreting and applying relevant laws and policies to rectify reporting discrepancies.

  • Maintaining accurate documentation for all retirement plans and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements associated with STRS and PERS.

  • Auditing, processing, reconciling, and correcting STRS, PERS, and benefit contributions in collaboration with the Payroll and Accounting teams.

  • Monitoring and managing audits concerning CalSTRS and CROWE, ensuring timely responses and adherence to compliance guidelines.

  • Facilitating open enrollment processes for clients, which includes rate updates, employee enrollments, terminations, and plan changes.

  • Assisting clients and employees with inquiries regarding benefits, including eligibility and coverage options.

  • Conducting training sessions for staff on best practices related to retirement and benefits.


Required Skills

For candidates interested in applying for this position, there are certain required skills and qualifications:

  • A high school diploma is mandatory. A Bachelor’s degree in business administration, accounting, human resources, or a related field is preferred.
  • A minimum of two years of experience in retirement plan administration, benefits administration, or payroll processing.

  • Strong understanding of CalSTRS, CalPERS, and 403(b) retirement plans.

  • Experience with employee benefits administration, open enrollment processes, and compliance knowledge.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel at an intermediate to advanced level.

  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills, along with a capability to ensure compliance with applicable state and federal regulations.

  • Strong communication and organizational skills are essential.

  • Familiarity with payroll processing systems (e.g., Paycor, ADP, UKG, Paylocity, Frontline, or Paychex) is a plus, as is experience with Sage Intacct or Abila Non-Profit Accounting.
