Job Overview

The company is currently on the lookout for a Senior Software Engineer I to take on a pivotal role within its Data Platform team. This team is responsible for owning and developing the central analytical platform across Samsara. The individual in this position will work with the fundamental infrastructure that fuels Sambara's data lake, distributed compute platform, and ensures proper data flows into the lakehouse from production storage solutions.

In this specialized role, the Senior Software Engineer will be tasked with designing, building, and operating scalable, secure, and reliable infrastructure suited for managing petabytes of data. The engineer will be instrumental in supporting various teams—including engineers, data scientists, analysts, and product teams—in building customer-driven features and fostering the company's AI and analytics ambitions.

Key Responsibilities

The key responsibilities of this role include:

  • Designing, building, and operating high-scale data ingestion and replication systems from Samsara’s primary data sources, including RDS, DynamoDB, and APIs, into the data lakehouse.
  • Developing and maintaining a modern data platform that efficiently accommodates extensive data needed across various functions within the organization.
  • Enhancing the reliability and performance of the existing infrastructure, which utilizes technologies such as Apache Spark, Databricks, and Delta Lake.

  • Keeping abreast with current data platform technologies, aiding in shaping the future infrastructure roadmap at Samsara.

Required Skills and Qualifications

The role demands the following qualifications:

  • A minimum of 4 years of professional software engineering experience in production settings.
  • Extensive experience in building and maintaining large-scale data infrastructure and understanding distributed systems.
  • Proficient in Apache Spark and experience operating production infrastructure within AWS, utilizing services like S3, RDS, and DynamoDB.
  • Strong programming abilities in at least one primary programming language, such as Go, Python, Scala, or Java.
  • Proven experience in system design focusing on scalability and operational excellence.

Additional preferred skills include familiarity with lakehouse technologies, Infrastructure-as-Code tools like Terraform, and knowledge of data orchestration systems such as Airflow and tools related to data discovery.

Compensation and Benefits

The base salary for this full-time position ranges from $130,900 to $220,000 USD annually, contingent upon factors such as geographical location, expertise, and experience level.
