Overview

Hoplynk, a pre-seed startup spun out of Stanford University, is seeking a Software Engineer specifically for their Network & Protocol Team. The role is located in Washington, D.C. and is classified as a full-time position. The company is focused on building innovative communications and networking layers for autonomous systems, ensuring connectivity even in challenging environments.

Company Background

Hoplynk aims to deliver a seamless embedded software/firmware stack that facilitates multipath, failure-aware networking across multiple link types. This is critical for maintaining the operation of autonomous systems and other mission-critical operations where connectivity is paramount. As a new player in the tech space, being part of this team means you will be at the forefront of next-generation networking technologies.

Role and Responsibilities

In this role, as the first networking specialist, you will directly impact the design, implementation, and measurement of a robust multipath networking protocol on Linux. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Designing and implementing the multipath routing/transport stack.
  • Defining and maintaining Service Level Objectives (SLOs) for key metrics like latency, loss, failover time, and throughput.
  • Building and optimizing telemetry systems on resource-constrained devices, which will involve maintaining stability in data schemas as the system evolves.
  • Running experiments in simulated networks using QEMU to gather real-world performance insights.
  • Collaborating with embedded/firmware teams to ensure smooth device operations and updates.
  • Supporting deployments by capturing execution traces, triaging issues, and improving the release processes as client demands grow.

Required Skills

Candidates should bring a diverse range of technical skills essential for the success of the project. Required qualifications include:

  • Strong Linux networking experience at layers L3/L4.
  • Familiarity with low-level programming languages such as C/C++ or Rust.
  • A proven track record of enhancing latency, reliability, or throughput through techniques like queue management and congestion control.
  • Comfort with transport and routing protocols including TCP, UDP, QUIC, MPTCP, and MPLS.
  • Experience in building network telemetry systems and the ability to simulate real conditions accurately during testing.
  • Proficiency in clear writing for documentation, and the ability to mentor and establish engineering standards.

Nice-to-Have Skills

While not mandatory, candidates with the following skills will have an advantage:

  • Knowledge of Routing & Fast-Path technologies, including frameworks like DPDK.
  • Experience with Wireless & Cellular Networking technologies like CGNAT or security measures like OpenWrt, Yocto, and secure boot strategies.
  • Familiarity with timing and observability tools such as NTP and PCAP.
  • Hardware familiarity, including schematic interpretation and testing in the robotics or autonomy sectors.

Tools & Technology

The software engineer will utilize various tools and technologies, including but not limited to:

  • Linux 6.x, MPTCP, OpenWrt, and iproute2.
  • Programming with Rust, C++, and Python for routing and full-stack development.

Culture and Values

Hoplynk places a strong emphasis on shared values which they believe are foundational to success:

  • Candor: Encouraging open and honest communication, particularly around hard topics.
  • Humility: Valuing strong opinions, yet maintaining readiness to adapt based on evidence and facts.
  • Initiative: Taking ownership and showing responsibility in problem-solving, while working in small, manageable increments with observable outcomes.

Salary Information

The job listing does not provide specific salary information, which may indicate that compensation is negotiable or dependent on experience and qualifications.
