Position Description

As a Streaming Engineer, you will contribute to the infrastructure team that manages the audio and video encoding supply chain from content acquisition to delivery. This role also requires providing around-the-clock support for video streams and other infrastructure-related tasks. It is crucial for candidates to be proficient in areas that enhance operational efficiency and address troubleshooting effectively.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be entrusted with several critical tasks:

  • Designing and implementing innovative live streaming workflows.

  • Developing support tools, scripts, and dashboards to improve operational efficiency.

  • Troubleshooting issues related to encoding and segmentation to ensure smooth streaming experiences.

  • Maintaining and supporting TEGNA's live encoders and VOD transcoding farms.

  • Documenting workflows and standard operation procedures to promote effective knowledge sharing.

  • Providing guidance to external teams on live encoder and packaging workflows.

Required Skills and Qualifications

A successful applicant should possess the following qualifications and skills:

  • A degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience is required.

  • A minimum of 2 years of progressively complex relevant experience is necessary, ideally in a video OTT/broadcast environment.

  • An understanding of DAI workflows in an OTT context is essential.

  • Must demonstrate an ability to work independently to solve problems that arise in both video and IT domains.



  • Proficiency in video codecs and compression methods such as H.264/AVC and H.265/HEVC is mandatory.

  • Familiarity with audio codecs and containers like AAC, PCM, AC-3, EAC-3, and MPEG-1 Layer-II.

  • Comfortable using Mac and Linux, mainly on the command line.

  • Strong communication skills are essential for collaboration with various teams.

  • Basic scripting experience in languages such as BASH, Python, or Ruby is required.

  • Capable of troubleshooting with Transport Stream and Elementary Stream analyzers.

  • Familiarity with video transport protocols such as RTMP, SRT, Zixi, HLS, and MPEG-DASH is beneficial.

  • Experience in supporting live-streaming delivery at scale is advantageous but not mandatory.

  • Familiarity with AWS Elemental products is considered a plus but is not required for this position.

Salary and Benefits

The salary range for the Streaming Engineer role at TEGNA is between $100,000 and $115,000 USD per year.
