Utilize encoder software applications and tools effectively to assign codes per the ICD (International Classification of Diseases), CPT (Current Procedural Terminology), and HCPCS (Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System). This also includes understanding and incorporating modifiers as needed.
Ensure coding guidelines and best practices established by prominent organizations are followed. The essential coding guidelines referenced include the Centers for Medicare/Medicaid Services (CMS), American Hospital Association (AHA), American Medical Association (AMA), and the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).
Code health records accurately and access charge work queues, assigning charges for ER and Observation services based on medical documentation. The position may also require oversight of observation hours documentation if executed by Healthcare Information Management (HIM).
Manage billing, claims, denial, and appeals issues in collaboration with various teams including HIM and Patient Business Services (PBS).
Communicate effectively with clinical staff and physicians regarding documentation issues or needs and display a comprehensive knowledge of coding ethics.
Maintain awareness of current coding trends and regulations, ensuring the highest standards of compliance are met.
Meet the established quality and productivity standards periodically enforced by the Revenue Excellence and HM (Health Ministry) coding procedures.
Possess and maintain continuing education units (CEUs) as required by coding credentials.
