Job Overview

Vultr is currently looking for a talented Network DevOps Engineer to join its team. This role is essential in evolving, automating, and operating RoCE-based Ethernet fabrics. As a highly visible position in a tech-savvy company, the new hire will operate at the junction of network engineering, operations, automation, and observability. The work will involve creating tooling and telemetry pipelines that ensure the network fabrics remain fast, deterministic, and reliable on a global scale.

Key Responsibilities

The Network DevOps Engineer will take on a variety of important tasks:

  • Automate deployment and operations of large-scale RDMA (RoCEv2) Ethernet fabrics across Vultr data centers.

  • Build frameworks using Ansible and Python for provisioning, validating, and remediating both underlay and overlay networks.

  • Integrate with Vultr’s source-of-truth systems (NetBox, OpsMill) for intent-driven configuration and validation.

  • Develop telemetry ingestion and correlation pipelines (using gNMI, Prometheus, Kafka, etc.) to gather real-time metrics of network health and performance.

  • Work in collaboration with product, orchestration, and platform engineering teams to enhance RDMA performance, along with PFC/ECN behavior, and symmetry across networks.

  • Implement CI/CD workflows for network configuration changes, which involve validation, pre-checks, and rollbacks.

  • Investigate complex network behaviors at various layers such as flow hashing, congestion domains, ECMP, and overlay interactions.

  • Contribute to the design of next-generation GPU and AI interconnect fabrics, ensuring they integrate smoothly into Vultr’s global network.

Required Skills

The ideal candidate for this position should possess the following qualifications:

  • A solid understanding of modern data center networking, specifically EVPN-VXLAN, BGP, MLAG, QoS, and traffic engineering.

  • Deep familiarity with RoCEv2, RDMA transport tuning, ECN/PFC, and the principles of lossless Ethernet design.

  • Strong experience with automation frameworks and programming languages like Ansible, Python, Golang, Rust, or PHP.

  • Proficiency in working with telemetry and monitoring stacks such as Prometheus, Grafana, Loki, and the ELK stack.

  • Previous experience in integrating systems like NetBox, Nautobot, or OpsMill for topology and configuration.

  • Familiarity with CI/CD systems such as GitHub Actions, Jenkins, and ArgoCD.

  • A robust background in Linux networking, including system-level debugging and working with namespaces and netlink.

Compensation

The salary for this position ranges from $90,000 to $130,000. However, the specific amount offered can vary based on factors such as location, years of experience, and individual skill sets.

Work Environment and Benefits

Vultr places significant importance on employee well-being, offering various perks:

  • 100% company-paid insurance premiums for medical, dental, and vision coverage.

  • A 401(k) plan matching 100% up to 4%, with immediate vesting.

  • Professional development reimbursement of $2,500 annually.

  • 11 Holidays plus paid time off (PTO) that accrues and can be rolled over.

  • Increased PTO at the 3- and 10-year anniversaries, along with a 1-month paid sabbatical every 5 years and an anniversary bonus each year.

  • A $500 stipend for remote office setup in the first year, with an additional $400 for each following year.

  • Internet reimbursement of up to $75 monthly and gym membership reimbursement of up to $50 monthly.
