Job Overview

The position vacant is for an Application Security Engineering Manager within Synthesia’s growing engineering and research organization. This role is pivotal as security measures become increasingly complex. The Application Security (AppSec) team leads the charge in developing AI-native security tooling and embedding security throughout the development life cycle at scale. The role is crucial in ensuring that the functionalities evolve alongside the rapidly growing product organization that is heavily invested in AI-assisted development.

The ideal candidate will focus on leading a team of exceptional senior and staff-level engineers. This position is distinct from standard coordination roles; the manager will actively engage with the technical aspects of the work in order to foster trust and creativity within the team.

Key Responsibilities

The core responsibilities of the Application Security Engineering Manager include:

  • Leading the AppSec team, focusing on support, growth, and development. This entails overseeing hiring processes, onboarding, performance management, and career growth for senior team members.

  • Owning the AppSec strategy and translating team input along with business risks into a clear, prioritized program of actionable tasks that will produce measurable outcomes.

  • Acting as a credible technical partner, engaging input substantively on various topics, including threat models, security architecture, and risk management.

  • Defining and maintaining the team's operational rhythm through methods like OKRs, quarterly planning events, and ensuring effective communication with stakeholders, including leadership.

  • Building relationships with stakeholders, including business leadership and engineering leads, to weave security measures into Synthesia’s building processes.

  • Evolving Synthesia's approach to AI-assisted development security, ensuring that security measures extend to the application of AI coding tools.

  • Engaging externally with customers and compliance programs as a representative of the AppSec team.

Required Skills and Qualifications

Candidates for this role should possess the following experience and qualifications:

  • Proven background as a Security Engineer, with experience in managing a team effectively.

  • Strong hands-on experience in application security including threat modeling, secure design reviews, SAST/SCA tooling, vulnerability management, and security automation.

  • Proficiency in Python and JavaScript, along with familiarity in cloud infrastructure using AWS and Google Cloud Platform.

  • Prior experience of people management — hiring, growing, and managing performance of security engineers.

  • Demonstration of a clear understanding of AI-native security engineering, specifically how it affects the attack surface and can be applied defensively.

  • Experience in a fast-growing SaaS or AI company where you actively contributed to an AppSec program.

Bonus points may be awarded to those with experience in Kubernetes, or familiarity with specific tools like Semgrep, Wiz, and CrowdStrike.

Work Environment and Culture

Synthesia promotes a friendly work culture that emphasizes high autonomy and encourages creativity within roles. Working environment flexibility allows employees to operate in a hybrid model, whether fully remote or part in the office located in London, Copenhagen, Munich, or Zurich.

Aside from relaxation time, benefits include:

  • 25 days of annual leave, plus public holidays according to the employee's location.

  • A generous referral scheme and a home office setup assistance.

  • The opportunity for employees to work anywhere in the world for up to 60 days per year.

  • Considerable opportunities for career development while contributing to the creation of a market-defining product.

Conclusion

This is an exciting opportunity for those looking to challenge their technical skills in security engineering while also leading a high-caliber team within a top-performing AI company. If passionate about application security and ready to make a significant impact at a high-growth organization, applying for this position at Synthesia could prove to be a pivotal career move.
